The Gulf Islands Food Co-op is a non-profit Co-op (see incorporation below), that connects the 4 Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada (Pender, Mayne, Saturna and Galiano Island).
Mission: facilitating inter-island cooperation in order to create new resources and practical supports, for our amazing Southern Gulf Islands food producers, valued eaters, and local food sustainability!
This includes welcoming Indigenous Food Gatherers and Creators from these Coast Salish traditional territories, and also following up on key priorities of the Southern Gulf Islands Food & Agriculture Strategy.
How we started: Inter-island community planning began in 2017, and was hosted by the non-profit Heartwood Folk School Society (https://heartwoodfolkschool.org).
Incorporation: Then on September 27, 2018, the Gulf Islands FOOD CO-OP was officially incorporated as a British Columbia non-profit Community Service Co-op, and started offering services in 2019.
Members: a majority will always be commercial or non-commercial Food Producers originating from the Southern Gulf Islands (SGI), but other Supporters are also welcome to become Co-op Members.
Direction: The Co-op is guided and supported by a volunteer Board of Directors and Island Liaisons, including representation from the Pender, Mayne, Galiano and Saturna Islands. We invite you to contact rk@gulfislandsfoodco-op.org if you’re interested in getting involved in this way.
