Greetings! This is the place to book the Co-op’s large Food Dehydrators or Pressure Canners, for use in food preservation and to support local food security! There is one of each on Pender, Mayne and Saturna Island, and you can book both pieces of equipment on your island at once.
To USE THE CALENDARS BELOW to book your 3-day slot, click your 1st day, then your 3rd day (and on some phones back to the 1st day), then there will either be an auto-scroll or you can scroll down and check the dates booked in the brief form to fill out. If you don’t get a timely email response, just call Zorah at 250-891-2424 to confirm your booking. For Galiano Island, please contact the Galiano Food Program which has similar equipment to lend.
The Dehydrators are metal with 10 racks and come with silicon sheets (much easier to clean) and an apple turner for thin slicing. The Pressure Canners are Presto 21 litre size, able to can 18 pint jars (stacked) or 7 quart jars at once (pressure canning required for vegetables, meat, fish and more). FOOD SAFE PRESERVATION – please read the instruction books with the equipment, inspect the equipment before use, and do your own research if unsure about anything!
CAUTION: Using electrical, heat, and pressure oriented equipment can be dangerous, and improperly canned food can make people very sick or worse. By requesting a booking here, you are accepting that you will USE THIS EQUIPMENT ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK, and that you release and absolve the Gulf Islands Food Co-op or any person or organization connected with this program of any responsibility whatsoever for the consequences.
We also invite a DONATION OF AT LEAST $10 (per booking, per piece of equipment), but not at all if this is a bit of a hardship for youare suggested (DONATE HERE, thanks!) This program is supported by the Vancity EnviroFund and CRD funding, plus the Pender dehydrator came from the Pender Islands Community Farmland Acquisition Project.
By booking, you are AGREEING AND COMMITTING AS FOLLOWS (in addition to the CAUTIONS above): to come pick up the equipment at the central Equipment Storer on your island, OR at the previous borrower; to properly clean and dry the equipment; and then to bring the equipment back to the Storer if there is no new upcoming booking soon. However, if you have room, you are encouraged to store the equipment until the next borrowing, and/or also tell your family or friends that they can borrow it too if they go online and make a booking.
