Co-op EQUIPMENT BORROWING
Greetings! The Gulf Islands Food Co-op has some Food Dehydrators and Pressure Canners, for use in food preservation and to support local food security! There is one of each on Pender, Mayne and Saturna Island. Thanks so much to Vancity EnviroFund, the Southern Gulf Islands Community Resource Centre, and others for supporting this project!
For Galiano Island, please contact the Galiano Food Program which has similar equipment to lend.
The Co-op’s Dehydrators are metal with 10 racks and come with silicon sheets (much easier to clean) and an apple turner for thin slicing. The Pressure Canners are Presto 21 litre size, able to can 18 pint jars (stacked) or 7 quart jars at once. Note that pressure canning (as opposed to regular canning) is required for vegetables, meat, fish and certain other foods. FOOD SAFE PRESERVATION – please read the instruction books with the equipment, inspect the equipment before use, and do your own research if unsure about anything!
CAUTION: Using electrical, heat, and pressure oriented equipment can be dangerous, and improperly canned food can make people very sick or worse. By asking for this equipment, you are accepting that you will USE IT ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK, and that you release and absolve the Gulf Islands Food Co-op or any person or organization connected with this program of any responsibility whatsoever for the consequences.
Central Equipment Storers:
Pender – Roz Kempe; Mayne – Eden Buday; Saturna – Veronica Vos/Saturna CRC
Please email info@gulfislandsfoodco-op.org if you’d like to find out more. We invite you to make a donation here if you end up using the Co-op’s equipment. However you do it, best wishes preserving your island food bounty!
