What is Giambori? It is a chamber music festival that has it’s roots in the hills of Tuscany where it was born and flourished in the beautiful rural valleys north of Lucca and just into the “Garfagnana”. Chris Redsell (now of Mayne) founded and directed it in Italy where he lived and it eventually attracted high calibre musicians from around the world who came for the music making and festive environment they found there. Giambori played in the most beautiful mountain side villages, in stunning walled piazzas and churches and then were feasted by the very generous and hospitable villagers well into the night.
In 2014 Chris and his wife Donna moved to a new Mediterranean climate here in the Gulf Islands and now live on Mayne. Provoked by many musicians who hankered after that Rural Italian Chamber music experience Giambori has been reborn here in the Gulf Islands and this will be the third season –playing on Mayne, Saturna and Galiano. In the past two summer seasons the emphasis has been on string quartets. This summer the concerts will be based around The Piano Quartet. This season the musicians are made up of one musician (cellist Eric Wilson)) who has played in the Italian Giambori, two of his fellow faculty members from UBC, David Gillam (violin) and Chiharu Iinamu (piano), Chris Redsell (violist) and Elisabeth Jahren (piano and accordion).
Music will include a piano quartet from Dvorak and music from Mozart, Schubert and Rachmaninov.
