Bill Reid Canoe Photo by Gulf Islander – London Display
November 20, 2017
The prestigious Horniman Museum in London, England has just purchased rights to a photo of Bill Reid’s Canoe, Loo Taas, taken by Hans Tammemagi of Pender Island. The photo will now be part of a permanent display showing Northwest Native canoes.
Bill Reid, Haida (1920-1998), was a master goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer and spokesman, and was one of Canada’s greatest artists.
Reid resurrected the art of canoe making – an epic undertaking since the last great Haida canoe was built in 1908. A single, old-growth cedar was felled, and slowly Loo Taas (Wave Eater), an elegant, beautifully painted, 50-foot canoe, emerged. Reid left behind an enormous legacy of world-class art, but his favourite was Loo Taas. While Reid’s canoe rests in Haida Gwaii, its image will be shared in London.
